Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. Knowing the basic steps for the most common situations can reduce pain, save a tooth, and help you decide how urgently to seek care.
Knocked-out tooth
Time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, gently rinse it if dirty, and if possible place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk and get to a dentist as quickly as you can, ideally within the hour.
Severe toothache or swelling
Persistent, severe pain or facial swelling can signal infection and should be seen promptly. Rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief as directed, and avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, which can burn the tissue.
Chipped or broken tooth
Save any pieces if you can, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to limit swelling. A dentist can advise whether the tooth needs bonding, a crown or other treatment.
Finding urgent care
Many clinics in Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer emergency or extended hours, and some operate around the clock. Keep your dentist’s contact details handy, and for any injury involving significant bleeding or trauma beyond the teeth, seek medical care immediately.
